Vibe coding a clone of a famous game just got harder, at least on Claude.

Anthropic changed Claude's instructions to allow original games, genre games and games built from a user's own designs and assets, while telling it not to recreate a specific existing game, even one that has been renamed or labeled original, as [Engadget](https://www.engadget.com/2303469/anthropic-updates-claude-to-stop-it-from-recreating-existing-video-games/)'s Jackson Chen reported. An X user spotted the new text first.

Anthropic's Addy Osmani, who works on the company's technical staff, confirmed the change on X. He said the goal is to keep Claude from copying someone else's game, since using Claude to infringe intellectual property breaks its usage policy, and that original and genre work shouldn't be affected. He added that Anthropic will keep adjusting to get the balance right.

## Why now

There has been a surge of big commercial games being decompiled with AI help and republished to play in a browser. Grand Theft Auto V, the first Halo and Modern Warfare 2 have all resurfaced as vibe-coded fan projects. Anthropic also has history here: it agreed last year to a record $1.5 billion settlement with authors over training data, and the Elvis Presley estate has since sued it.

## The reality check

The line between "a game in a genre" and "a recreation" is fuzzy, so expect false positives for people building legitimate homages, and expect people to try other models for the projects Claude now declines. A model refusing doesn't make a clone legal elsewhere. It just moves the legal risk to whoever ships it.

**[Scoreboard](/scoreboard) update:** Humans +1. Game creators get a model that won't clone their work.

Stay undead.
