When the product is unpopular, change the label. That appears to be part of the plan.

OpenAI is preparing a public relations push for after Tuesday's US midterm elections, Axios reported, and [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/01/openai-might-rebrand-its-data-centers-as-ai-compute-campuses/)'s Anthony Ha highlights one idea in particular: renaming data centers as AI compute campuses.

Speaking to Axios, OpenAI policy chief Chris Lehane framed the midterms as a preview of 2028, a race he thinks AI will dominate. Among the proposals he discussed: AI speed limits, helping people see AI as something that empowers them day to day, and having the US help set global standards.

Lehane also called the fight over data centers good and healthy, and said communities should hold companies accountable so they truly benefit from these projects. That fight has had real effects: Amazon and Microsoft have both said they will drop NDAs in negotiations with local governments.

## The reality check

A new name doesn't change water use, power demand or tax deals, which is what local opposition is actually about. The more meaningful signal is the NDA reversal, which came from residents and officials pushing back, not from marketing.

**[Scoreboard](/scoreboard) update:** Humans +1. Local pushback forces Big Tech to rethink how it sells data centers.

Stay undead.
