# Nvidia may cosign the loans on Nscale's Anthropic data center

> A reported guarantee would leave the chipmaker holding the keys if Nscale can't pay to build its West Virginia campus. The AI buildout now runs on vendor-backed credit.

The AI industry has found a new way to keep the concrete pouring: get the chip supplier to vouch for the customer's debt.

Nvidia is negotiating to guarantee billions of dollars in construction financing for Nscale, the AI cloud provider building a West Virginia campus for Anthropic, [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/30/nvidia-weighs-playing-the-cosigner-for-nscales-ai-data-center-in-west-virginia/) reported, citing The Information, with Bloomberg later backing up the account. TechCrunch's Aditya Mehta lays out the stakes: Nscale's IPO filing puts Anthropic's contract for just the first building at $44.6 billion.

## What the deal would actually do

The structure on the table is a residual value guarantee. If Nscale stopped paying for construction, Nvidia would temporarily take over the site and help line up a buyer and a new tenant. That money would cover power and building costs, which is new territory: according to the report, Nvidia's past help for cloud providers has mostly gone into leases and chip purchases.

The first building is planned at 460 megawatts and is expected to run Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin chips. Anthropic and Nscale are reportedly discussing a second building worth about $45 billion more.

## Why Nvidia would sign up

Read it as customer insurance. Anthropic is one of the biggest buyers of compute anywhere and splits its spending across several chipmakers, and an investor quoted by The Information suggested that is the real reason Nvidia wants this project to survive. Nvidia has already put roughly $170 billion into investments and credit support for neoclouds and big customers, including $1 billion in convertible financing for Nscale in September.

## The reality check

Nscale's execution so far is thin. In August it was operating about 25,000 high-end AI chips; the plan calls for nearly 500,000. The West Virginia site only won state certification in September, after construction runoff flooded nearby homes more than once. Separately, Microsoft walked away from a planned Nscale site in England this month because grid power there won't arrive until the 2030s. None of that has stopped Nscale from targeting an IPO valuation as high as $35 billion.

Investors are already nervous about companies like this. CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN had each lost more than 30% of their share price in October as of last week, per CNBC. And Anthropic, which filed to go public this week, could end up with a junk credit rating once it lists, according to a warning Blackstone gave investors. That would make its own borrowing more expensive.

For developers, the takeaway is simple: the compute behind your favorite model increasingly sits on a stack of guarantees, not just GPUs. When the vendor is also the lender, the supply of AI capacity depends on credit markets staying calm. Worth remembering the next time a rate limit changes overnight.

**[Scoreboard](/scoreboard) update:** Draw. The AI buildout keeps going, on borrowed money.

Stay undead.
