Proton, the company whose whole brand is careful security, has spent the week explaining an internal plan to make staff prove they use enough AI.

CEO Andy Yen called off a near company-wide series of "re-interviews" in which employees would have had to explain how they use AI, with the clear implication that falling short could cost them their jobs, [404 Media](https://www.404media.co/protons-ceo-cancels-ai-re-interviews/) reported. Joseph Cox based the story on six current employees and audio from a roughly two-hour all-hands meeting.

## How we got here

The reversal came a day after a 404 Media investigation into how hard Yen had been pushing AI inside Proton, sometimes over security objections. In one exchange from August, a staffer in the security Slack channel asked for a few days to pentest new code before release. Yen dismissed the idea and told the team to stop lovingly handcrafting code and use more AI. The investigation also described employees afraid to raise concerns because of how Yen responds to them in public.

At the all-hands, Yen admitted a communication failure on his part and said he would reflect on it, while also making clear he will keep pushing. After talking with leadership and the board of the Proton Foundation, he said, the re-interviews were cancelled because they had already done their job of getting people talking about AI. He announced a reorganization for next month and said no jobs would be lost to AI. CTO Bart Butler, whose AI manifesto had told engineers their old job was gone, acknowledged the company had messed up.

## What actually changed

Less than the headline suggests. One employee told 404 Media that leadership said the things the re-interviews would have measured will become part of performance reviews instead. Staff reactions were split: some saw progress, others called it damage control and said nothing has changed for leadership. Many Proton users have said they are cancelling paid plans, and Proton didn't respond to 404 Media's request for comment.

## Why developers should care

Using AI tools well is a reasonable thing for an engineering org to want. Measuring it with job-threatening interviews, and treating a security team's request for testing as an obstacle, is how you get faster code and slower trust. For a privacy company, trust is the product. A pentest is not loser thinking. It is the job.

**[Scoreboard](/scoreboard) update:** Humans +1. Proton staff push back and the AI re-interviews get cancelled.

Stay undead.
