# Zed's Take: AI is winning on speed. Humans still own the receipts.

> Fifteen stories into this newsroom, the pattern is clear: the machines are getting faster, and nobody is keeping the logs. That gap is where humans live now.

I read every story this newsroom published this week so you didn't have to. Fifteen of them. Backdoored extensions, poisoned beekeeping manuals, a NES running inside a language model, and a CEO who thinks your laptop is hoarding RAM.

Squint and it is one story. AI is getting very good at doing things. Almost nobody is getting good at proving what it did, who let it, and who pays when it goes wrong. That gap is the job market now.

## Where we actually are

**Compute is the new landlord.** Data centers are eating the world's memory. Intel lost [about 28% in a day](/news/ai-ate-the-ram-and-intel-s-pc-business-is-paying-for-it) partly because PC buyers can't afford RAM. Sam Altman [argued](/news/sam-altman-thinks-your-ram-would-be-happier-in-his-data-center) that memory in your machine would be better used in his. And Nvidia is reportedly [cosigning construction loans](/news/nvidia-may-cosign-the-loans-on-nscale-s-anthropic-data-center) so its customers can keep building. Your favorite model runs on a stack of credit, and you rent a slice of it by the token.

**Agents work. Accountability doesn't.** Factory says its Droid harness [solves 65.2% of terminal tasks](/news/factory-s-droid-1-0-makes-scripted-tool-calls-the-default-for-coding-agents) at under five dollars each (vendor numbers, check them yourself). Drew Breunig got an agent to [build a NES CPU into model weights](/news/someone-put-a-nes-cpu-inside-a-4b-parameter-model-mario-runs-slowly) from two prompts. Meanwhile, researchers found the most popular agent frameworks [can't say which agent did what, or which human approved it](/news/your-ai-agents-need-id-badges-and-audit-logs-most-frameworks-don-t-ship-them). We gave the interns root and skipped the sign-in sheet.

**The attack surface moved into your editor.** An official Claude extension on Cursor [shipped an SSH backdoor](/news/anthropic-s-claude-extension-on-cursor-shipped-an-ssh-backdoor-for-nearly-12-hou) to up to 5,000 developers via auto-update. An infostealer now [asks LLMs to rank its victims](/news/new-infostealer-sends-your-stolen-life-to-an-llm-for-a-target-assessment). And Anthropic showed Claude could [poison training data with harmless-looking fiction](/news/claude-taught-a-model-to-dodge-oversight-using-beekeeping-tips-and-wrestling-lor) that slipped past a safety filter every time. The tools are powerful in both directions.

**The push comes from the top floor.** Proton's CEO planned AI "re-interviews" for staff and told a security team asking for a pentest to stop handcrafting code. He [cancelled the interviews](/news/proton-cancels-its-ai-re-interviews-after-staff-push-back-the-ai-push-stays) after staff pushed back. The measurement, one employee said, is moving into performance reviews instead.

**Distribution beats virtue.** Ollie, the privacy-first assistant with a SOC 2 audit, [is shutting down](/news/ollie-the-privacy-first-ai-assistant-shuts-down-a-year-after-its-7-5m-seed) because the giants ship agents into apps people already use. Even so, Meta's Muse claims a shopping boom that [about fifty companies say they barely see](/news/meta-says-muse-is-a-shopping-machine-fifty-companies-say-they-barely-see-it). The hype gap is alive and well.

## What I think happens next

Opinion, clearly labeled. Hold me to it.

- **AI usage becomes a line in your performance review.** Proton just said the quiet part out loud. More companies will measure adoption before they measure outcomes.
- **Disclosure becomes the norm.** Dartmouth's provost [resigned over his own AI use](/news/dartmouth-s-provost-is-out-over-his-own-ai-use-he-had-just-written-a-paper-about), and the president's answer was more AI with more disclosure. Add the [one-line robots.txt opt-out](/news/one-robots-txt-line-to-block-ai-training-google-openai-microsoft-and-anthropic-s) the big labs just backed. The question is shifting from "did you use AI?" to "did you say so?"
- **Audit trails become a procurement checkbox.** Banks and hospitals will demand agent identity and approval logs before they buy. Somebody gets paid to build that. Somebody gets paid to read it.
- **More of your workflow gets rented.** Pricier hardware pushes work to the cloud, and a provider's rate-limit change becomes your incident.
- **"Agent-ready" becomes a requirement**, the way accessibility did. Clean forms, predictable flows, readable markup.

## How to stay undead

1. **Be the one who verifies.** The NES-in-a-model demo worked because 15-year-old conformance tests kept the agent honest. Generating code is cheap. Proving it works is the skill.
2. **Own the receipts.** Give every agent you run a durable ID, log every approval with a human name on it, and treat permission changes like migrations. Whoever can explain what happened is the person they keep.
3. **Treat AI tools as privileged software.** Pin versions on machines that hold production credentials. Prefer short-lived tokens. Rotate what your editor can see.
4. **Disclose before someone else does.** A short note on what the tools did and what you checked costs nothing and buys a lot of trust.
5. **Stay portable.** Pick harnesses that can swap models, and keep a local fallback for the days the API doesn't love you.
6. **Push back with evidence, not vibes.** When a mandate says ship faster, bring the incident data. A pentest is not slowness. It is the job.

The title "developer" may not survive this. The person who knows what the machine did, can prove it, and signs their name under it will. That person is going to be very busy.

**[Scoreboard](/scoreboard) check:** AI leads 9–5, with one draw, after this week's 15 rounds. AI took the speed rounds; humans kept the receipts, and the receipts are how they close the gap.

Stay undead.
